Self-Care in Relationships: An Astrological Perspective

Relationships aren’t about switching off—they’re where we truly grow. During Libra season, discover how self-care can help you find balance, navigate challenges and strengthen your relationship with yourself and others

Right now, we’re in Libra season and for the next four weeks the energy around us is Libra-inspired. Libra is all about balance, harmony and—most importantly—relationships. Whether you’re consciously aware of it or not, this period has a way of drawing your focus toward what’s out of alignment in your connections, especially with those closest to you.

Relationships are curious things. Growing up in the late ’70s and ’80s, I was surrounded by rom-coms, chick flicks and the ever-present theme of “happily ever after.” Like many, I unknowingly bought into the idea that my happiness would be sealed with the arrival of my knight in shining armour. My very own Hollywood ending.

Yet, experience has taught me that Hollywood may have gotten it all wrong. Instead of “happily ever after,” real life begins when the credits roll. The honeymoon phase ends and that’s when the real story starts. In astrology, relationships are governed by the 7th house—the Descendant, which represents the part of ourselves we can’t see, our shadow. It’s not about finding the person who ‘gets’ us; it’s about connecting with someone who helps us see the parts of ourselves that we don’t often acknowledge.

This is far from easy. When two adults, with their own unique perspectives, communication styles and values, come together, the result can be less Hollywood and more hard work. So how do we care for ourselves within these relationships? How do we navigate self-care when relationships are front and centre, especially during Libra season?

  • Understand Your Relationship Can’t Meet All Your Needs
One of the most liberating truths I’ve come to realise is that no relationship will meet every single one of your needs—and that’s okay! Take stock of what your relationship does bring and seek to fill the gaps elsewhere. Friends, hobbies, spiritual practices—all of these can play a part in your self-care ecosystem.
  • It All Starts with You
Yes, it’s a bit of a cliché, but it’s true: the relationship we have with ourselves sets the standard for all others. If you don’t love and respect yourself, how can you expect someone else to? Libra season is a perfect time to reflect on this. How do you treat yourself? How do you speak to yourself? If you can strengthen your relationship with you, everything else tends to fall into place.
  • Communication is Key
So much of our relationship tension comes from things getting lost in translation. Whether it’s small miscommunications or deep-seated differences, talking things out is vital. For me, walking and talking works wonders. It’s far less intense than sitting face-to-face and the movement often helps stuck energy find its way forward. Maybe for you, it’s journaling or finding a safe, neutral space to air things out. Whatever it is, prioritise communication.

Remember, relationships aren’t designed to help you switch off or coast through life. They challenge us, expand our view of ourselves, and at times, hold a mirror up to what we’d rather not see. But that’s the beauty of it. Relationships are where we grow, even if it doesn’t feel like the fairy tale we once imagined.
